We will change the worldWhat a marvel-ous time was had by all at this year’s 2nd Annual Marvel on the Runway! Seating at the Signet Life Center in Chesapeake, VA, was sold out at 140 tickets. It was an opportunity for families and friends to experience 30 individuals from various challenges and backgrounds slay the catwalk. It was a dream come true for many families who had never seen their person in this element. Volunteers and supporters traveled as far as Richmond, VA, and Jacksonville, FL. What started two years ago with 15 girls and women with disabilities expanded to 30 persons, including boys and distinguished gentlemen.

On Saturday, March 16, makeup artists, hair stylists, clothing designers, chaperones, and volunteers collaborated to make the show a success! The runway was filled with fashions by local designers such as Tonya Dale (TD Couture), BrandNewZ Clothing, Dinita Lang (Express Yourself), and Tameka Edwards (What’s in your House). VIP Sponsors and vendors included Baila Fuzion Art Center, Wick & Sip Candle Lounge, Uniq’Elegance, Metro Ministers, Grams of Faith, Royal Bling & Things, Christian Women Alliance, and NPW Solutions, to name a few. The beautiful published model, Mz Shawna Valentine, added spice to the show by returning for the second year as the guest Emcee. She brought with her performing artist BooCoo11 from Richmond, VA.

Dr. Donita believes the participants have a message that they can be recognized in the modeling and fashion industry! People with special needs have been watching from the sidelines too long – shamed and stereotyped without reason. Dr. Donita wants to permanently change that by hosting this event annually. It will be held in her daughter Blake’s birth month (March). Next year’s goals include providing an onsite medical staff, scholarships, and purchasing a van to transport individuals to rehearsals and the event. If interested in sponsoring, modeling (must have an IEP or medical documentation), or volunteering please contact Revdonita@gmail.com.
